as told by GANESH RAMAKRISHNA CO-FOUNDER & PARTNER
As a startup, we are always looking for cultural hacks.*
In fall 2017, Larry and I were discussing ways to engage our team at Opex Analytics in an authentic way. During one of the discussions, we came up with the idea of a weekly quiz that encouraged Opexers to test their quantitative and logic skills.
It immediately struck me as a great addition for two reasons:
True to a good startup culture, we wanted to test the idea quickly. Larry came up with a probability quiz and the Opex community responded very well. For this first puzzle, we had more than a third of the company participate and it started a rich dialog on Slack. It did not take much for us to realize that we got this one right.
In the fifteen months since, Larry has penned more than 50 quizzes inspired by ideas from very different parts of Data Science — probability, mathematics, operations research, computer science, and algorithms.
We want to share this book with you in order to provide a sneak peek into the kinds of problems that the data science skillset lends itself to solving, as well as a view into our cultural DNA at Opex Analytics. I am told that the best way to solve these puzzles is to have a beverage by your side! We will let you decide that for yourself. Good luck!
*Cultural hacks are innovative ideas that align the organization around the core values that best represent the company on the whole.
If you find any errors, develop any ingenious new solutions, or just want to talk puzzles, feel free to write. In the meantime — happy puzzling!
